Banska Bystrica  Slovak people have an old proverb that says ‘Alive in Bystrica, dead in heaven’. Visitors are attracted by the historical town centre and the picturesque surrounding landscape with the Low Tatras mountain range, the Kremnicke Hills, High Fatra and Red Mountains. The most significant buildings are located in the town centre. These include a collection of important burgher houses, Banska Bystrica Castle, the house of King Mathias, the Church of the Assupmtion of the Virgin Mary and of St Elizabeth, and the medieval town-hall. These sights, together with several other architectural gems, have been listed as part of the National Heritage.
